  • History and Origins:
Teotitlán del Valle has a long history rooted in the intertwined traditions of natural dyes and weaving. For centuries, Zapotec artisans have preserved textile knowledge through generations, making the creation of handwoven textiles central to the cultural identity of the community.

  • Textile and Weaving Tradition:
The village is renowned for its pedal loom weaving, where artisans transform wool into rugs and textiles distinguished by geometric compositions, ancestral motifs, and finely developed craftsmanship. Weaving in Teotitlán is both a practical and artistic tradition, shaped by technique, symbolism, and a deep connection to place.

  • Natural Dye Process:
A defining element of this tradition is the use of natural dyes derived from cochineal, indigo, walnut shells, marigold, and other local plants and minerals. These pigments are prepared through time-honored methods and used to dye yarns before they are woven, creating a rich and culturally significant palette.

  • Production Process:
The making of textiles begins with preparing and dyeing wool, followed by spinning, warping the loom, and weaving by hand. Each stage requires precision and inherited knowledge, reflecting a process where color, structure, and pattern emerge together through the rhythm of the loom.

  • Cultural Significance:
Natural dyes and weaving hold deep cultural significance in Teotitlán del Valle, expressing the continuity of Zapotec knowledge and the relationship between craft, community, and the land. Textiles are often seen not only as functional objects, but as carriers of story, identity, and memory.

  • Artisan Communities:
Teotitlán del Valle remains home to a vibrant community of weavers and dyers who continue to sustain and evolve this living tradition. Collectives such as Mujeres que Tejen, led by Doña Josefina Jiménez, contribute to preserving these practices while creating space for innovation and intergenerational exchange.

In the vibrant tapestry of her existence, she stands as the proud torchbearer of Zapotec tradition, distinguished as the founder of "Mujeres que Tejen."

Her journey is intricately woven with threads of empowerment, dedicated to liberating women from her village through the ancient, pre-Hispanic Zapotec ancestral craft of natural dyes and rug weaving. She has cultivated a sanctuary where women break free from the constraints of heteronormative standards.

Embracing the richness of Zapotec tradition, she represents the fourth generation of weavers in her family, inheriting the sacred art from her mother. Weaving, for her, transcends a mere craft; it is a therapeutic symphony where her focus converges on each piece. The loom becomes her instrument, and the threads, her notes, blending harmoniously like nature's palette in every season.

For 47 years, the rhythmic dance of the pedal loom has been her trusted companion.

It has witnessed the poetry of her hands, translating cultural legacies and ancestral dreams into woven realities. Weaving is not just an art but a profound transmission of her culture and traditions. Each thread intertwines with the spirit of her heritage, creating masterpieces that echo the dreams of her ancestors.Through this ancient craft, she has bestowed upon women the keys to financial independence and control over their destinies. No longer confined by the dictates of house, family, or society, they blossom into weavers of their own narratives. Some, who only speak Zapotec, embark on the poetic journey of self-discovery, teaching themselves Spanish to harmonize with the melodies of Oaxacan and Mexican society.

Her loom becomes a vessel through which she navigates the complexities of cultural preservation, social emancipation, and individual empowerment.

As she weaves, she is not merely crafting rugs; she is crafting dreams. In every meticulously woven product, she threads the symphony of her culture, the resonance of her traditions, and the poetry of her dreams. Each creation is a testament to the transformative power of the loom, an ode to the liberation of women, and a legacy woven into the fabric of time.
